About Ellen

Skilled therapy is a collaborative process between client and therapist in which we identify individual strengths and skills, as well as the challenges that bring the client to therapy.

My approach is an integration of support, respect, and sometimes challenging feedback towards personal growth, balanced living, improved relationships, and emotional stability.

Areas of focus in my practice for improving psychological well-being include self-esteem challenges, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, mid-life transitions, grief and loss, codependency, and stress management.

FAQ’S

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Psychologists typically complete seven years of graduate school, earninga PhD or PsyD, and provide outpatient “talk ” therapy. They generally do not prescribe medication.

Psychiatrists complete medical school training, earning an MD degree that includes psychiatric classes and rotations. They often provide a combination of medication and talk therapy, although their sessions are typically much shorter.

How do I choose a therapist?

This is a difficult question to answer because there are many individual factors to consider. Sometimes location, office hours, and insurances accepted are practical and import considerations. Much of choosing the most helpful therapist for you is a combination of being able to develop trust, a sense of positive rapport, mutual focus on your treatment goals, and an awareness that you are leaving your sessions with applicable tools and a sense of progress. If you perceive that these are not a regular part of therapy, then you would want a therapeutic relationship that you can openly and honestly share your concerns and receive listening, meaningful feedback, and actionable change in treatment that reflect your concerns when possible.

How long are sessions?

The initial session is usually 60 minutes. Session length can vary from about 45 minutes to an hour. Most sessions in my practice are typically about 55 to 60 minutes.

How often would we meet?

To obtain the most benefit from treatment, I recommend weekly sessions for the majority of the treatment length. This frequency supports sustaining goals between sessions and ample time to apply and practice tools discussed in session. As progress has been sustained, there is often a mutual discussion of reducing frequency, and then successful termination of therapy.

What is your therapy approach?

Through my educational background, internship, and post-doctoral work, I have been trained in a variety of therapy models. Often, these are integrated into a unique formulation for the individual based on their goals, symptoms, and evidence-based effectiveness. In general, my approach integrates principles of self-psychology, mindfulness research, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

What services do you provide?

I specialize in providing individual therapy. If family therapy or couples therapy is indicated, I will refer the client to another provider for those services. I primarily treat adolescents 13-17 years old, and adults. When working with adolescents, I ensure that they and their parents understand privacy and confidentiality policies, to find what works best for that individual and their treatment goals.
